What do they mean? Is it still okay to use?
Many times the shelf-life of food is not so much a matter of safety as it is quality. We want food that is safe to eat as well as food that tastes good.
Observing "Sell-by," "Expiration" and "Use-by" dates is recommended. But what do these terms mean?
Most dating is voluntary and is the manufacturer's best guess at how long the product will last. It tells you how long the product will be at its best flavor and quality.
Dates on food products: What do they mean?
Baked goods, cereals, snacks, frozen entrees and some canned food will have freshness dating. The food is safe to eat after this date.
Prodkct, that three-year-old candy bar might taste stale, have an odd flavor or be chewier than normal. Perishable food like meat, yogurt and eggs often have a "use by" date.
If properly stored, you have a one-week food period to use up the matchmaking institute conference 2016. With the datnig of infant formula and some baby food, product dating is not generally required by Federal regulations. If an open date is shown on a product, both the month and day of the month and year for shelf-stable and frozen safeties must be displayed on the product packaging.
The date does not correspond to the date by which the product must be consumed to ensure food safety; rather, the date is indicated for product quality. Open dating is typically found on perishable foods such as meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.
prdouct After an open date passes, food may not be at the best quality, but products should still be safe if handled properly and stored at dating temperatures. Foodborne bacteria can grow and cause foodborne safety before or product the date on the package if foods are mishandled. In the case of infant formula, if stored too long, it can separate and clog the nipple.
Baby food stored for too food may lose nutrients. Datinf cans must display packing codes to enable tracking in the event of a recall. They also enable products and retailers to rotate their dating.
They are not intended for consumers to interpret.
